The short answer: Buy the Ninja Blast if you make one smoothie at a time and want to spend less. Buy the Blast Max if you want a bigger 22 oz serving, a dedicated Crush program for ice and a cup you can detach and carry, and that’s worth at least $30 more to you. It’s also the more powerful of the two: Ninja markets it with an upgraded motor.
The Ninja Blast (model BC151) and the Ninja Blast Max (BC251) look like two sizes of the same blender, but the Max is more than a bigger cup: it’s stronger, bigger and more automated. Here is what the $30 difference actually gets you.
What actually changes between the two
Five things:
- Power. Ninja markets the Max as having an upgraded, more powerful motor than the original Blast. It doesn’t publish a wattage for either model in the US.
- Capacity. 18 oz for the Blast, 22 oz for the Max.
- Programs. The Blast has one automatic program and one speed. The Max has three Auto-iQ programs: Blend, Crush and Smoothie.
- The cup. The Max has a Twist & Go vessel that detaches from the motor base. The original Blast is designed to be sipped from directly, through its sip lid.
- Price. $69.99 list for the Blast, $99.99 for the Max. When we checked in late September 2026, Amazon had the Blast at $44.99, which widens the gap to $55.
What doesn’t change: both carry a one-year limited warranty, and both have dishwasher-safe cups and lids.

18 oz or 22 oz: does the size matter?
Four ounces is about half a cup. In practice, it’s the difference between a standard smoothie and one with room for a scoop of protein powder, a handful of spinach or extra ice, without going over the fill line.
The Max also sets a floor: Ninja recommends at least 6 oz of liquid, marked by a MIN LIQUID line on the vessel. That’s a useful guardrail for thick blends, and it means the Max isn’t built for very small servings.
If your usual blend is a single-serve fruit smoothie, 18 oz is enough. If you’re making a meal-replacement shake or a post-workout blend with add-ins, the extra room is the most concrete thing the Max offers.
Battery and charging
Ninja rates the original Blast at up to 15 blends per charge, with a full recharge in about 2 hours. For the Max, Ninja’s own figures vary by source, from up to 15 blending cycles in its support FAQ to up to 44 blends in Blend mode on one of its regional sites, and a full charge takes up to 3 hours. In short: the Max holds at least as many blends per charge as the Blast, but takes longer to recharge.
One practical difference: the Blast charges over USB-C, so the cable you already carry for your phone will likely work. For the Max, Ninja’s documentation describes a charging port on the back of the base without naming the type. Check what’s in the box before you count on a single cable for travel.
Ice and frozen fruit
This is where the extra programs earn their keep. The Max has a dedicated Crush program for ice, alongside Smoothie and Blend. The Blast has a single automatic program; Ninja says its BlastBlade handles ice and frozen fruit, but you don’t get a setting tuned for it.
The Max also has more power behind it: Ninja describes its motor as more powerful than the original Blast’s. And its Auto-iQ programs pulse and pause on their own, which saves you from stopping to shake the cup by hand when ice gets stuck around the blade.
Cleaning and carrying
Both cups and lids go in the dishwasher. For the Max, Ninja specifies the top rack only and warns against heated cycles, a detail worth respecting if you want the seals to last.
The Twist & Go cup is the Max’s most practical feature for commuters: you blend, detach the cup and leave the motor base behind. With the original Blast, you drink from the blender itself, so it comes with you.
